El Special Pathogen Laboratory de Pittsburg, ha sido cerrado.

El Special Pathogen Laboratory de Pittsburg, liderado por los Dres Victor Yu y Janet Stout ha sido cerrado por las autoridades del centro hospitalario (Veterans Hospital), sin motivos claramente justificados (ver www.legionella.org ) .

Dicho laboratorio ha sido pionero en la investigaci�n sobre Legionella y referente mundial respecto a t�cnicas de procesamiento, cultivo y m�todos moleculares.

Con el cierre de este laboratorio la comunidad cient�fica internacional pierde uno de sus grandes valores.

Nuestro grupo, que viene colaborando desde hace años con el grupo de Pittsburg, ha cre�do conveniente redactar la siguiente carta de soporte a los Dres V. Yu y J. Scout, que ha sido remitida a distintos lideres parlamentarios de Estados Unidos.

Desde aqu� hacemos una llamada a aquellos que consideren oportuno sumarse a este apoyo para que nos manden cartas de soporte a los Dres V. Yu y J. Stout.

The Special Pathogen Laboratory in Pittsburgh, USA, which is headed by Dr. Victor Yu and Dr. Janet Stout has recently been closed by the authorities of the Veterans Hospital in this city without any apparent justification (see www.legionella.org) .

This laboratory is the pioneer in research on Legionella and is a reference worldwide with respect to Legionella culture techniques and molecular processing methods.

The closing of this laboratory represents the loss of one of the great resources of the international scientific community.

Our group has collaborated closely with Pittsburgh for years, and has felt the necessity to send the following letter of support for Dr. Yu and Dr. Stout to different congressmen in the United States.

Those who would also like to join in this movement of support are welcome to send us letters of encouragement to Dr. Yu and Dr. Stout.

EL SPECIAL PATHOGEN LABORATORY DE PITTSBURG HA SIDO CERRADO

To whom it may concern:

We have recently heard about the closing of The Special Pathogens Laboratory at the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System. It goes without saying that this news has taken us all by surprise.

Our group, Geleg (Legionella Study Group) has been devoted to the study of Legionellosis since 1985. Geleg is integrated in the Autonomous University of Barcelona and is made up of healthcare professionals and technicians and is headed by Prof. M. Sabria. We have a Legionella laboratory in which studies related to Legionellosis are performed and which provides support for clinical and environmental research. Some of the most outstanding publications made by our group in recent years may be consulted on our webpage www.legionella-online.org.
Therefore, as a group dedicated to this field we would like to express our consternation regarding the closing of the The Special Pathogens Laboratory at the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System, and we would like to point out some considerations:


1) Dr. V.Yu and Dr. J. Stout are currently considered to be World leaders in the field of Legionella. This is supported by their numerous publications, communications and speeches undertaken in prestigious scientific journals and international congresses.

2) Dr. Yu and Dr. Stout have always been references in the field of Legionellosis and have been a continuous source of support for our group. The advice given by these two specialists led to the eradication of Legionellosis in our hospital which had had a history of nosocomial Legionellosis for many years. On the other hand, the experience of the Allegheny County Health Department for Legionella Prevention in Health Care Centers has been included in the Catalonian Guidelines for Legionella Prevention and are under evaluation by other authorities for their inclusion in international guidelines.

3) The protocols of the work of The Special Pathogens Laboratory at the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System have been strictly followed by our research laboratory and by many other laboratories for years with great success. In this sense, the stay by one of the members of our group (ML Pedro Botet) in the laboratory of Special Pathogens Laboratory during July and August in 2002 was fundamental in the modification of previous protocols and the incorporation of new technology to our laboratory. All of this has undoubtedly reinforced the prestige of our group at both a national and international level.

4) Without the existence of the Special Pathogens Laboratory many of the protocols and preventive actions against Legionellosis would not have been published. For example, methods of prevention such as ionization in potable water systems, the efficacy of biocides in non potable water systems using an experimental model designed by the Vet laboratory as well as many other approaches which have modified the knowledge of Legionellosis worlwide.

5) Likewise, it is a great pity that the extraordinary knowledge of Dr. Janet Stout in this field will not continue to expand and be diffused throughout the scientific community.

6)  We consider that the need for a state reference laboratory on Legionella is of vital importance. The protocols used in the study of Legionella in clinical and environmental samples are not uniform and the results obtained in one sample may differ from one laboratory to another. This methodological diversity begins with the collection of samples and continues with simple techniques such as the quantification of Legionella in culture or with more complex techniques such a molecular subtyping or PCR studies. The laboratory of Geleg in Badalona is one of the reference laboratories in Catalonia and in the rest of Spain and has always considered the Special Pathogens Laboratory as an international reference and Dr.Yu and Dr. Stout as world leaders in this field.

It is therefore difficult for us to understand the reasons for the closing of the Special Pathogens Laboratory at the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System. We consider this action to not help the common cause of international research in the field of Legionellosis and to be a great error which we sincerely hope will be rapidly corrected for the good of the scientific community.

LA GENERALITAT REGISTRA 11 CASOS DE LEGIONELLA EN UNA SEMANA

La conselleria descarta un brote en D�nia.

La Comunitat Valenciana ha registrado once casos de legionela entre el 2 y el 8 de julio, seg�n recoge el bolet�n epidemiol�gico de la conselleria, una cifra m�s elevada de lo habitual. La Marina Alta y Marina Baixa son, con dos casos cada una, las comarcas que m�s casos acumularon.

CINCO PERSONAS INFECTADAS POR LEGIONELLA EN FRANCIA

CINCO PERSONAS INFECTADAS POR LEGIONELLA EN UN EDIFICIO FRENTE A LA PLAYA DE BIARRITZ

Cinco casos de legionella han sido detectados en las ultimas semanas en el sur de Francia. Los afectados podr�an haber contra�do la enfermedad en el edificio Victory Surf de Biarritz.

Uno de los afectados entr� el 18 de mayo en estado de coma en el hospital de Toulouse; actualmente ya ha sido dado de alta. Parece ser que se trata de turistas que hab�an pasado unos d�as en el edificio. El inmueble esta dotado de 400 apartamentos y esta en primera l�nea de la playa

Antes de la aparici�n de este brote, las autoridades sanitarias habian hecho un an�lisis del agua del citado edificio cuyos resultados mostraron niveles de legionella superiores a las normales.

La direcci�n de asuntos sanitarios ha informado del incidente a todos los propietarios as� como a las personas que ocuparon el edificio los diez d�as precedentes a la aparici�n de los casos. Se ha procedido a la desinfecci�n de la red de distribuci�n de agua sanitaria del edificio..

MAS DE 149 AFECTADOS DE LEGIONELOSIS EN PAMPLONA

Mas de 149 afectado de legionelosis Pamplona.

El n�mero de personas afectadas por el brote de legi�nella detectado en Pamplona asciende ya a 149, en las �ltimas horas dos casos has sido diagnosticados seg�n el departamento de sanidad. El departamento de sanidad ha informado que en el dia de hoy se han dado 7 altas, con lo quedan todav�a ingresadas 15 personas en centros hospitalarios

De los 15 pacientes ingresados, siete lo estan en el el hospital de Navarra (uno de ellos en la UCI) cinco en el hospital Virgen en el Camino (uno en la UCI) uno en la Clinica Universitaria, uno en el Hospital Clinico de San Miguel de Pamplona y uno en el Hospital Miguel Server de Zaragoza (en la UCI). La evoluci�n es favorable en todos los casos.

UN BROTE DE LEGIONELLA EN UNAS PISCINAS DE BARCELONA AFECTA A 5 PERSONAS

El Departamento de Salud y la Agencia de Salud P�blica de Barcelona confirmaron ayer la existencia
de un brote de legionela en las piscinas Bernat Picornell, ubicadas en la montaña de Montjuïc de Barcelona.
De momento hay cinco personas afectadas, y todas ellas son usuarias de este complejo deportivo.
Existe otro caso pendiente de confirmaci�n.

DOS CASOS ENTRE LOS INVITADOS DE UN HOTEL EN ILLINOIS

El Departamento de Sanidad de Illinois ordeno cerrar un hotel en Lincoln, limpiar su piscina y spas despu�s de confirmarse dos casos de legionella en clientes hospedados durante los meses de Enero y en Febrero. Las instalaciones examinadas dieron positivas en la prueba de la legionella. Las autoridades sanitarias llamaron a mas de 800 antiguos clientes del hotel para interesarse por s azul, especialmente por si hubieran padecido s�ntomas sugestivos de la enfermedad del legionario. No se detectaron mas casos.

DOS CASOS DE LEGIONELOSIS EN UNA RESIDENCIA DE ANCIANOS DE OHIO

Dos mujeres residentes en Una residencia de ancianos en el noroeste de Ohio fueron diagnosticados de enfermedad del legionario. Los casos fueron informados al Departamento del condado de Ottawa el 23 de Febrero y el 11 de Marzo, una de las mujeres estaba aun en el hospital y la otra fue dada de alta. Otros 4 internos mostraron s�ntomas, pero las pruebas para Legionella dieron negativas. Los otros 35 internos que all� viven, fueron trasladados temporalmente a otra ubicaci�n. Se est�n investigando el posible foco y las v�as de transmisi�n.

La revista mensual Eurosurveillance de diciembre de 2005 incluye los casos de la enfermedad del legionario
que ocurrieron en Europa en el 2003 y 2004. En este periodo, 9166 casos fueron comunicados por 35 pa�ses, de las cuales 941
casos fueron asociados con brotes. En España la incidencia fue de 28.7 y 23.8 por millon de habitantes en 2003 y 2004 respectivamente (poblaci�n estimada 41.1 millones de habitantes).La tasa de mortalidad fue del 8.2 % (748 casos)
